S2: Episode 19: Hot-n-Juicy

Season 2

Last episode—I covered some McDonald’s discontinued items that I miss. Today—let’s talk about Wendy’s.

Back in the late 80’s/early 90’s, I had a retail job at a nursery & garden center. During the spring/summer—it was “go-time” and we worked hard with long hours—and consumed insane amounts of calories. Fast food was a big part of my life.

We had a rotation, where one of us would drive and pick up for like 5 other people. The mix: McDonalds, Wendys, and Taco Bell were weekly. Rally’s, Burger King, and Arby’s were every 2 weeks. Long John Silver and Subway were sprinkled in—and local places would get mixed in when we were getting bored.

Wendy’s burgers and chicken sandwiches crushed McDonalds—crushed. Here were a few that I would love to eat today.(F.A.T Editors Note: High cholesterol and a slower metabolism might prevent this. Aging. Sigh.)

I actually had to edit myself to not list 10. I didn’t realize there were so many Wendy’s items that were so good. This one might have a part 2 one of these days.

  • Bacon Mushroom Melt - The absolute best burger at a fast food restaurant ever. Ever. No hyperbole. I think it first came out in 1991—and showed up here and there during the 90’s. I don’t have the words to properly describe it. Cheesy, burger-y, mushroom-y greatness! I had a few days where, I’d eat if for lunch at work and then would stop by after work and pick one up for the road.

  • Chicken Cordon Bleu - Another delicious entreé that was introduced in 1991. Minus the mayo, of course. The Dijon mustard mixed with the swiss cheese, ham, and chicken? So so good.

  • Monterey Ranch Chicken Sandwich - Another sandwich from the early 90’s. This one launched around 1993 - Chicken, bacon, and ranch. Delicious.

  • Fresh Stuffed Pitas - Around 1997--these tasty “healthy” options dropped. The Chicken Caesar one was my jam.
