Here we go…
1. TV - Hodge-Podge - In a Season 6 episode of CHiPs in early 1983—This late pop star appeared as the lead singer for the fictional band “The Cadillac Foxes”. She was at her peak stardom—with her recently having a song peak at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1982. A hint: This song was a one-word title. Who is this artist—and what was this song that was her biggest hit?
This episode was kind of bizarre if you think about it: Why were Ponch and Bobby—2 California Highway Patrol cops—assigned to protect a musician and her band from a shady promoter? Like—they should be focused on speeders! Anyway—it made for an exciting plot that episode!
That lead singer of The Cadillac Foxes was Laura Branigan who had a decent little 1980’s career. She had seven Billboard Top 40 hits in the 80’s—and her signature hit was Gloria.
Lots of 80’s goodness in this CHiPs clip!
2. Movies - “Cheesy Movie” Quotes -
Character 1: "So who are you? Are you, you, like, some special forces guy or something?"
Character 2: "Nah. I'm just a cook."
What is this 1992 cheesy action thriller where these lines were said?
Our first - maybe last? - Steven Seagal movie question.
Under Seige was this cheesy classic - Seriously, it was ranked 10th in earnings in the Domestic Box Office for 1992. 10th!
It beat out such movies as: White Men Can’t Jump, Boomerang, Fried Green Tomatoes, Alien 3, My Cousin Vinny, JFK, The Mighty Ducks, and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!(I kid…I kid).
Seagal’s character Casey Ryback and actress Erika Eleniak had those classic lines of dialogue in the movie.
This was Seagal’s peak performance both at the box office and on screen—A great movie to watch on TBS or TNT in the mid-90’s.
3. Music - Movie Soundtracks - This song was played in the climactic scene of this 1984 sports-ish movie. What is this song and the movie? If you can pull out the artist also—that’s impressive!
If this scene from The Karate Kid doesn’t get you motivated to kick Cobra Kai ass? I don’t know what else will.
We’ve got Daniel…we’ve got Mr. Miyagi…we’ve got Johnny…we’ve got John Kreese….we’ve got assorted filler Cobra Kai students and other karate students…and most importantly, we’ve got Elizabeth Shue’s Ali. And the cherry on top of that kick-ass montage - Joe “Bean” Esposito’s You’re The Best playing over it!
4. Anything Goes - Hodge-Podge - On July 19, 1986 - this English pop/rock band who had been performing for almost 20 years—had their first and only Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit song. One week later - on July 26, 1986—the former lead singer for this band had his one and only #1 hit song.
Who is this band and solo artist?
What were these two #1 hit songs?
This is the part where Mrs. Final Answer Trivia yells at me - “Stop being negative about stuff”. Sigh….unfortunately, I can’t help it here.
The first song was by Genesis - Invisible Touch. Just a song that teenage me thought was super-lame. I thought Genesis had some good songs that got some radio play back in the 80’s/early 90’s: Turn It On Again, Abacab, Man On The Corner, Land Of Confusion, and No Son Of Mine were all pretty decent.
Invisible Touch? Ugh - Apparently, I was in the minority since it hit #1.
Their former lead singer from the late 1960’s/early 1970’s was Peter Gabriel. He knocked them out of the #1 spot with his hit Sledgehammer. No idea why - but - this song was nails on a chalkboard to me. The music video was cool - but the song? Bleh.
Gabriel had a couple of songs that I liked: Big Time and In Your Eyes were both great songs. However, Shock The Monkey was weird and the video was equally as weird.

5. Deep Cuts - Movie Soundtracks - The song that we played in our music question above was actually supposed to be in a hit 1982 sports-ish movie but was passed over for another song that became a smash hit.
What is this 1982 sports-ish movie that our Music Category song was originally supposed to be in?
What was the smash hit song that replaced it?
—and for a mega-deep cut—what 1983 movie was this song from above offered to—but was declined before it landed in the 1984 sport-ish movie?
Crazy how things work out - So, it was originally supposed to be in Rocky III. The lyrics “history repeats itself, try and you'll succeed, never doubt that you're the one, and you can have your dreams” were meant to tie in to Rocky’s fighting history and all of that stuff.
I don’t know if it was Stallone or some execs—but somebody decided to swap out You’re The Best with Eye Of The Tiger. Man - Survivor hit the jackpot with that decision.
A side note - Stallone wanted Queen’s Another One Bites The Dust - they said no deal.
And the mega deep cut - The song was offered to be used in the movie Flashdance - Esposito had another song on the Flashdance soundtrack - but You’re The Best was denied for Michael Sembello’s Maniac instead.
Close your eyes and picture Rocky training, fighting, whatever to You’re The Best instead of Eye Of The Tiger. Or Apollo telling Rocky “Dude- You’re The Best” instead of telling him “Now when we fought, you had the eye of the tiger, man, the edge.” Crazy!
Or just think about a music video of Jennifer Beals dancing on that chair, training, welding to “You’re The Best” instead of Maniac.
Funny how it all worked out.
